There are a lot of iOS users that have lost hope there will ever be an untethered jailbreak for iOS 6.1.3 for iPhone 5 and Apple TV 3 despite intense efforts to that end. First progress signs have already been reported and while we are working on the Apple TV 3 jailbreak, it’s always nice to hear good news to keep all of us motivated. Earlier this month, the Seas0nPass developers released for public use a tethered jailbreak for Apple TV 2 running iOS 5.1.2 (6.1.3).
 Seas0nPass Jailbreak iOS 5.2.1/6.1.3

Thanks to an updated seas0npass version, there is a jailbreak for ios 5.2.1/ 6.1.3 on Apple TV 2. This is definitely good news and we hope it’s a good sign for those of you who have lost hope your Apple TV will ever see the “light” of a new jailbreak.

The updated Seas0nPass jailbreaks iOS 5.2.1 or 6.1.3 on Apple TV 2 but performs only a tethered jailbreak, so you will have to keep your device connected to your Mac or PC when rebooting. That way you won’t have to install the jailbreak every time you reboot.

Don’t be disappointed because this is just a tethered jailbreak, Seas0nPass devs did a really good job and we’re sure they are working just as hard as we are to give you a free public release of an untethered jailbreak for ATV 2.

So, if you’re dying to rip the benefits of a jailbroken Apple TV 2, running iOS 5.2.1 (6.1.3) here’s how to perform the tethered jailbreak using the updated seas0npass tool:
Seas0nPass for Mac [10.6 or later]
Seas0nPass for Windows [XP or later]

Step 1

This is all about preparation. Prepare for the jailbreak Apple TV 2’s power cable, silver aluminum remote and a micro USB cable that is a maximum 1 meter long.

Step 2

Once you’ve got those items ready to go, it’s time to download the seas0npass jailbreak files. There are two versions available: one that works with Mac (10.6 or later) and one for Windows (XP or later).

Step 3

In the downloaded seasonpass jailbreak files, double click the folder and extract all the files. Select the .exe file and double click on it to launch the jailbreak application. You might be prompted a message that asks you to install iTunes, just click OK and proceed.

Step 4

You will have to click the “Create IPSW” option which basically activates the jailbreak app. Seas0nPass will now begin to download the Apple TV 5.2.1 ipsw file and create a jailbroken version of it. When that’s done, you will be asked to put your device in DFU mode.

Step 5

Entering the DFU mode is always something of a hassle for the first-time jailbreaker. Just follow these guidelines and you should have no problems entering the DFU mode the next time: plug-in the power cable and then the micro USB cable to your Apple TV. Wait for the front light to start glowing before pressing at the same time the Play and Menu buttons for 7 seconds. Remember to use the silver remote, not the plastic one. When the front light is blinking you have successfully entered your Apple TV 2 in DFU mode.

Step 6

Your Mac or desktop is now communicating with your Apple TV 2 in DFU mode. iTunes will launch and take over for you for the last few stages of the tethered jailbreak. It will begin a restoration process and when it will display a 1602 error message, don’t freak out. It is normal and it is a sign that your jailbreak has been performed correctly and is now completed.

Step 7

Before enjoying the perks of your newly jailbroken Apple TV 2 iOS 5.2.1, you will have to perform a few new steps to set top box on Tetherboot. Here’s how to do that. First of all, if the Seas0nPass jailbreak wizard closed after the jailbreak complete message, you will have to click on the Seas0nPass jailbreak file again and select “Boot Tethered” this time.

Step 8

Use the micro USB cable to connect your Apple TV 2 to your computer and put the box in DFU mode again. Just follow the guidelines we presented at Step 5. While in DFU mode for a second time during the tethered jailbreak, your Apple TV 2 will be taken over by iTunes.

Step 9

Remove the micro USB cable from the computer. Make sure you don’t touch the power cable however.

Step 10

Connect the HDMI cable to your Apple TV, set the Language and then just select “No Thanks” when the policy page is displayed.

Step 11

On your Apple TV 2’s home screen you should see the XBMC Media Center icon. If you do see it, then congrats: you’ve successfully performed a tethered jailbreak of your Apple TV 2 iOS 5.2.1.

The Apple TV User Guide: How to Set Up Home Sharing for ATV 2 and ATV3

$

The best feature of Apple TV is allowing you to share and transfer content from multiple iTunes libraries. This means Home Sharing is optimum comfort for the multi-media device fan, getting access to all content in iTunes library on several platforms, including Apple TV 2nd generation and Apple TV 3rd generation. For the avid user of iOS, home sharing might not be exactly new, but for those of you who just happened to received an ATV for Christmas or your birthday, home sharing might feel like it should be dealt by a software engineer, although it is easy enough to handle it all by yourself.

First of all, the Home Sharing feature works with iTunes 10.2 or later as well as Apple TV 2nd generation, Apple TV 3rd generation, iPad, iPhone and iPod touch. Playing iTunes content through your ATV requires a Wi-Fi connection and your Apple ID. Once you’ve set up Home Sharing for ATV, all of your iTunes content will become available in the iTunes Shared Menu.

Here’s how to set up Home Sharing on your ATV2 and ATV3:

Step 1
Launch iTunes. In the left side of iTunes, select Home Sharing.

Step 2
Using the File Menu (File > Devices > Turn On Home Sharing) you will have to enable the feature. Use the same path if Home Sharing isn’t visible, although once it is enabled, it becomes invisible until another computer with Home Sharing is enabled.

Step 3
To activate Home Sharing you will be requested to enter your Apple ID and password. Once you’ve done that, click on “Turn On Home Sharing”.

Now all that’s left is to set Home Sharing content as your heart desires. Although it happens only when you are manually transferring content between iTunes libraries, Home Sharing doesn’t check for duplicates, so you might find it a hassle sorting through duplicate content. It also means there will be none of your history for content available, because iTunes ratings, play history and comments are not transferred from iTunes. Advices such as these, and many more are soon to come, just check out our website’s new section.

Most Apple TV owners feel that without jailbreaking, the device is as dead as a brick, well, besides AirPlay. And like most of our savvy gadgets in the house, to rip benefits to the fullest you will need to know how to make a few settings, which includes streaming and getting access to content via multiple platforms, including to the iTunes libraries in the home. Today’s user guide will teach you how to configure AirPlay settings for Apple TV.

1.    What is AirPlay?

AirPlay is an iOS feature that allows you to stream content from your devices to your HDTV via Apple TV and AirPlay speakers using a wireless internet connection. The feature is compatible with ATV, iPad and iPhone 3GS/4/5 as well as iPod touch (2nd, 3rd and 4th generation). Apple says the best AirPlay experience comes with the latest software updates, but some users have argued it’s not necessarily the case. However, it works with iOS 4.3 or later on iPad, iPhone and iPod touch, with iOS 5.1 or later on Apple TV and with a computer via iTunes 10.2 or later. To stream content via AirPlay to your Apple TV 3rd generation you need iOS 5.0 or later or iOS 4.2 or later for Apple TV 2nd generation.

2.    How to configure AirPlay on Apple TV

Setting AirPlay on Apple TV is extremely easy. All you have to do is go to the Settings menu, select AirPlay and then On. You can change your AirPlay speakers via Apple TV by selecting the Settings menu > AirPlay and then select from the list your desired speaker.

3.    How to enable AirPlay from your computer and iTunes to stream content on Apple TV

Step 1
To enable AirPlay, you have to connect your Apple TV to the same Wi-Fi network as your computer is on.

Step 2
Launch iTunes. Make sure it is 10.2 or later.

Step 3
Go to the bottom-right corner of iTunes to click this icon:

Step 4
You will be prompted with a list of available devices, so select yours to start playback.

Apple TV 2nd generation Vs. Apple TV 3rd generation: Tech Specs Comparison

You don’t need expert tech knowledge to see there’s an obvious difference between Apple ATV 2 and Apple ATV 3. Well, apart from the jailbreak, which is currently in the works. But buying an ATV 3 is something you should consider if you’re interested in getting the best of the series. ATV 2 is currently discontinued, whereas production for 3rd generation Apple TVs is up and going seeing as recent figures have proved there are actually millions of people buying the Apple HDTV content streamer.

ATV 2 vs ATV 3 Tech Specs

Processor: With Apple TV 3rd generation, Apple introduced the A5 Single Core ARM Cortex-A9, dual core with one core closed that has definitely made things leaner and provided support for the added features. ATV 2’s Apple A4 ARM Cortex – A8 has long become obsolete. Also, the tweaked version of ATV 3, aka the ATV 3.2 features a smaller modified chip, an Apple A5x with single core that saves 800 mW across the board.

Graphics: With the new processor, graphics have improved too. ATV 3 features Apple A5 PowerVR SGX543MP2, whereas ATV 2 carries the Apple A4 PowerVR SGX535.

Memory: This is an obvious improvement from ATV2, as ATV 3 features 512 MB compared to the 256 MB the 2010 model has. Not at all that impressive, but it’s a good enough step forward.

Storage: Both the ATV 2 and the ATV 3 feature the same storage, an 8 BG NAND Flash for Cache.

Connectivity:  Both devices have the same connectivity features: Micro-USB (limited to service and diags), infrared receiver, optical audio and HDMI.

Network: Apple TV 2 and Apple TV 3 share the same networking compatibility: Wi-Fi (802.11a/b/g/n) and 10/100 Ethernet.

Output: This is something that has visibly changed over the past few years. From ATV 2’s 720 60/50 Hz (NTSC/PAL) and 576p 50 Hz (PAL) over HDMI only, Apple has moved forward to 1080p/1080i/720p/480p over HDMI only and HDCP capable.

Audio: Same Optical audio at 48 kHz fixed sample rate and HDMI.

Power: No changes here, both devices having a built-in 6W power supply.

Dimensions: Apple hasn’t bothered with the exterior of ATV 3, thus both devices have the same dimensions: 23mm in H x 98 mm in W and 98 mm in D.

Weight: Same goes for weight, both Apple TVs having a weight of 0.6 lb.

OS: Given there’s a difference of two years between the release dates for these two devices, a lot has changed, including (thank God) iOS. In 2010, ATV 2 was released with ATV firmware 4.0 (aka iOS 4.1), and two years later, ATV 3 was presented, running Apple TV firmware 4.2 (aka iOS 5.1). At the moment, both run on Apple TV Software 5.2.1 (aka iOS 6.3)

Apple TV would be nothing without the AirPlay and AirPlay Mirroring features, which definitely make it a lot easier for the gadget fan to enjoy a great media experience via various platforms. It also makes it all the more comfortable to lay in your couch with your iPad and enjoy a glorious weekend of movies, music, web browsing and TV without actually moving a finger. AirPlay Mirroring does all of that for you. All you need to do is connect your iPad to Apple TV via AirPlay Mirroring.

Connect iPad to Apple TV via AirPlay Mirroring

The whole process is quite hassle free and as long as you’ve configured AirPlay and AirPlay Mirroring at least once you shouldn’t feel like it’s a configuration that requires expert help. In fact, the set up is incredibly easy. Just make sure your devices are all compatible. For AirPlay Mirroring to work your iPad should be 2nd generation or newer and should run iOS 5 or later. Small note: if you’re planning to mirror to a Mac, you will need an app to support that, but for all the other iOS devices compatible, everything gets done in a matter of minutes. The other condition to remember is that for AirPlay Mirroring to work, your devices must be connected to the same Wi-Fi network.

Step 1

To activate AirPlay Mirroring, look for its icon in the Multitasking Bar on your iPad (double-tap the Home Button to launch it). You will be prompted with a list of recently used apps, so browse it until you see the AirPlay icon, which looks like this:

Step 2

Tap it.

Step 3

You will be prompted with a dialog box that displays all iOS devices on your Wi-Fi network that can be mirrored. Select Apple TV and make sure the toggle button for “Mirroring” is ON.

Step 4

There is no Step 4. You’re done! That’s how easy it is to turn on AirPlay Mirroring from your iPad to Apple TV.

AirPlay was released with iTunes 10 so its features are not available for the original iPhone, the first ATV, iPhone 3G or the first iPod touch. AirPlay works with iOS 5 or newer and with devices connected on the same Wi-Fi network.

AirPlay Mirroring is a feature that gives users access to display on their ATV whatever they run on their iPhone and iPad. This applies to games, movies, videos and even websites, content which can be streamed to your HDTV for a more comfortable experience. The best part is that this doesn’t require any cables, just a Wi-Fi.

Here’s What's So Cool about Apple TV3

Apart from those that have already bought an ATV3, there’s a bunch of people intrigued about this device’s popularity. Jailbreak or no jailbreak, ATV3 can do some pretty cool things, the kind that we, as avid tech users and media content fans, oftentimes are in need of. Sure, Roku does basically the same thing, but Apple TV 3 has this neat feature called AirPlay Mirroring, that combined with AirPlay and Home Sharing, gets you access to all of your favorite content right from your favorite TV-watching place: your comfy sofa. Oh, and it does all of this without miles of cables!

I kind of let it all out in the first paragraph, but stay with me. ATV3 is a sleek device, and it’s not just because the jailbreaking is so challenging. Apple TV3 is a $99 comfort-provider, price tag which is arguably affordable considering what it does and who made it. The fact that it was made by Apple sets it apart in itself and let’s be fair, Apple fans or not, the devices this company makes are really premium. Even with all the recent glitches, anybody will choose an iPhone, an iPad or an iPod if they had the money to actually afford any smartphone or tablet.

Features such as Home Sharing, AirPlay and AirPlay Mirroring make ATV3 well worth the money. Sure you will have to pay for a lot of subscriptions, but nowadays you can enjoy content without being charged an arm and a leg. Figure it out which compatible channel is more you and for the rest you’ve got iTunes content, YouTube streaming and soon... the jailbreak.

Even if limited to a few channels, you can still have a lot of fun with your ATV3 or ATV2. AirPlay Mirroring, once configured, makes friends of your HDTV, Apple TV and whatever content your tablet or smartphone is displaying at one point be it web browsing, YouTube videos, gaming or reading.

If you start asking about the coolest things ATV 3 can do, many will tell you that without the jailbreak the device is as dead as a brick. We’d advise that instead of keeping it in the box you start using it and see what it can add to your experience, while we’re working on the jailbreak. Imagine how many weekends you could spend on your couch or in bed, watch and listen to your iTunes content on your sleek HDTV aided just by an iPad, iPhone or Mac.

All about Apple TV 3: the Updated Version (3.2)

There’s been a lot of rumoring going around regarding the tech components of Apple TV 3,2, a tweaked version of the device released a few months ago. It got a lot of people curios as to why has Apple released a new version of Apple TV 3 and speculations have sparked consistently ahead of the product’s release, back in March.

It was expected (or hoped) that the tweaked version of Apple TV 3 would feature the A6 chip that Apple debuted with iPhone 5. A lot of people hoped that the tweaked ATV 3 would also feature twice the RAM its older brother had. “Since the previous antennas were part of the Apple TV PCB, and the FCC disclosure notes that the new Apple TV uses a single PIFA (Planar Inverted F Antenna), it’s highly likely we’re looking at a completely different PCB” reads a report by AnandTech.

As it turned out, Apple’s ATV3.2 features just a minor update and definitely no A6 processor. Apple changed the A5 with an A5X chip which was translated in the new product list under the new features line as featuring new silicone. The difference is in size, the ATV 3.2 Broadcom BCM 4334 wireless chip being visibly smaller than the previous. It is 6mm x 6mm, whereas the A5 is 8.19mm x 8.68mm.

It’s also a less power-hungry chip than the A5 in ATV 3. In a review of the ATV3.2, AnandTech writes that “power savings are nothing short of significant”. On the overall, A5X saves 800mW across the board according to the power test AnandTech has performed. The review also notes that “the DRAM is no longer integrated in a PoP (Package-on-Package) stack but is rather a discrete component”.

Although Apple denied that the component change would impact the performance of ATV 3.2, some websites have speculated that the new Broadcom chip would be the cause of recent wireless issues a lot of users have reported with their brand new ATV 3. “We sometimes make component changes, which require an updated model number for regulatory approval. The component changes we made don’t affect product features, and Apple TV customers will continue to have the same great user experience” reads a statement released earlier this year.

All About Apple TV 3: Tech Specs and Main Features

Arguably not as popular as other Apple products such as iPhone or the iPad, Apple TV definitely comes in handy if you are the kind of tech fan with an avid passion for HD quality content. Basically Apple TV and Roku are the most popular devices that get your internet content streamed to your TV and whether or not you are planning to buy one yourself or just got one for last Christmas and have no idea what it can do, we’ve prepared a small guide that aims to summarize all you need to know about Apple TV 3, the latest of the series. We will be looking primarily at ATV 3 tech specs and its main features.

For $99.00 (+free shipping) you can get a tiny Apple TV that streams content from your iOS devices to your HDTV. It’s the ultimate gadget for the avid comfort seeker, allowing you full movie nights on the couch without moving a finger and without worrying about all kinds of cables. It can stream 1080p HD content via AirPlay and AirPlay Mirroring that ranges from photos to videos, websites, music and even games. You will have to buy a HDMI cable though. It also streams Netflix, Hulu Plus, Vimeo, YouTube, MLB, NBA and NHL, although most of these will require a subscription. Jailbreaking an ATV 3 (although not yet fully possible) opens the device to a variety of apps and extra free content sources.

The device is 0.9 inches (H), 3.9 inches (W), 3.9 inches (D) and weights 0.6 pound. The black small box uses a new-generation Apple chip, the single-core A5 chip and needs a Wi-Fi (802.11a, b, g, or n) wireless network (wireless video streaming requires 802.11a, g, or n) or 10/100BASE-T Ethernet network to work. For streaming media from a Mac or PC, you need to have updated to iTunes 10.6 or later. The device also features a micro-USB, although it is meant solely for service and support.

Apple TV 3 is can play video formats H.264 up to 1080p frames, High or Main profile level 4.0 or lower, with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps per channel, as well as MPEG 640 by 480 pixels with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps and stereo audio in.m4v, .mp4 and .mov files. Also, motion JPEG up to 35Mbps, at 1280 by 720 pixels in PCM stereo audio in .avi format. Photo formats compatible with ATV3 are jpeg, gif and tiff, whereas audio formats range from protected AAC (iTunes) to Mp3, Dolby Digital 5.1, WAV and several others.

CNET Believes Xbox One Lays the Ground for the Next Apple TV

I know you’re keen on hearing the latest news about Apple TV and I’ve just stumbled upon an interesting article on CNET that raises some questions. CNET’s Scott Stein believes that the recently announced Xbox One lays the ground for the next Apple TV.

There are countless rumors going around about Xbox One, and one thing seems to be certain, the Xbox One is set to reshape the TV-gadget market and is going to set the ground for Apple. Don’t think about these two gadgets as being competitors says CNET, when in fact “the Xbox One is Apple’s best friend” writes Stein. “Apple needs the emerging TV landscape to be tackled, and whatever mistakes are made, Apple can improve upon them, and show everyone why that strategy was mistaken”. Sort of like Apple has done with the smartphone, tablet and mini tablet. It can all be done better.

In terms of TV-content streamers the market is not scarce in options. Even so, there aren’t many compelling products out there, and although Roku and ATV 3 might be top of the list, these two need improvements. In fact, as Stein wonderfully points out, none of the current TV-related devices is able to replace the cable box or to be “the true, absolute future of TV”.  There’s need for more apps, more live TV, better content, friendlier user-interface and must-definitely an improved remote.

Apple TV 3 is definitely a better looking and better equipped gadget and that was something consumers have noticed soon after the device’s release, because for the first time, this gadget got a fraction of that Apple craze consumers have shown for iPhone and iPad. Apple sold five million ATVs last year which generated $495 million in revenue. Seeing as the device is priced at $99, it is by far one of the most affordable Apple devices, yet one of the least known for the most part.

Yet, ATV boasts only 18 apps. Sure, the iPhone had a similar start. But this is 2013, and there are over 800,000 apps available in App Store. Hulu Plus, YouTube, Podcasts and Netflix are fun and all but are not enough. The same goes for the live TV, live news and sports channels it makes available. The list should be considerably extended for one device to become the real future of TV.

Your Apple TV 3 Has Wi-Fi Issues? You Might Just Get a Free Replacement

Apple products have become increasingly problematic. That’s something we’ve become accustomed to over the past few years although Apple’s new releases promise a premium user experience, when in fact, it turns out, some of them are so flawed the company, not only acknowledges there is in fact a problem, but launches a replacement program.

Poor Wi-Fi connectivity has surged as an obvious problem with Apple’s latest generation devices. Users have complained about iPhone 5 and the iPad not being able to hold a Wi-Fi connection, whereas for ATV 3 the Wi-Fi issues are even more frustrating. “Apple has determined that a very small number of Apple TV (3rd generation) products might experience one of these Wi-Fi related connectivity issues: Cannon locate network, Unable to join network, Dropped or intermittent connection” reads an announcement by Apple itself sent to retail stores, AppleCare staff and official resellers.

9to5mac believes to some extent the ATV 3 Wi-Fi issues could be due to the new wireless chips Apple has been using lately for what the website calls “a tweaked version of its third-generation Apple TV”. The version that is experiencing Wi-Fi problems is believed to be the one with the new Broadcam wireless chips. “It is plausible, we speculate, that the change in WiFi parts could have been in response to these WiFi issues in some third-generation models” concludes the 9to5mac report.

There are a few conditions though if your ATV3 has such a poor WiFi connection that you want it exchanged. First of all, your claim will be verified by an Apple technician who will test your device to see if the problems pertain to those thee mentioned above. Also, the serial number of the ATV 3rd generation must be within the specified serial number range, which is DRHN (the last four letter of the serial number). And the third and fourth alphanumeric characters of the serial number has to contain one of the following pairs: H9, HC, HD, HF, HG, HH, HJ, HL, HM, HN, HP, HQ, HR, HT, HV, HW, HX, J1, J2, J3, J4, J5, J6, J7, J8, J9.

If your Wi-Fi problematic ATV3 meets all those requirements it will be replaced with another one, all free of charge if your request is made within two years since the purchase date.

What’s New at Apple TV 3

March 7, 2012 Apple released Apple TV 3. It wasn’t much of a big deal. Well, it wasn’t as important for the mainstream media as the iPhone and iPad releases, even though it did make a compelling case, because by the end of the holiday season, Apple TV 3rd generation made it to most of your homes. AnandTech writes that last year alone Apple sold five million Apple TVs which translated in a whopping $495M in revenue. Quite impressive for a device many have ignored.

ATV3 Tech Specs

For the user who isn’t particularly interested in digital content and transforming their house in a media center, ATV 3 might not look too different compared to ATV 2, and truth being told, there’s a lot Apple hasn’t bothered changing with its 2012 model. Photos still need sync, there’s no DivX, it isn’t NAS compatible, nor has Netlix or Pandora embedded, not to mention that USB slot works only for support. It’s not lighter (both the 2nd and 3rd generation devices have 0.6lb each) and it’s definitely not smaller or tighter (23mm in H x 98 mm in W and 98 mm in D).

But don’t take that the wrong way. ATV 3 is a better device than ATV 2. It’s not necessarily smaller, but it does have new exciting features such as 1080p resolution and enhanced processor. There’s the new home screen and improved UI, Genius DJ playlists, movie extras and LP compatibility, and finally, refined sync options. It also has a better memory (512 MB compared to 1st and 2nd’s 256 MB) and a faster processor, switching from Apple A4 (ARM Cortex-A8 – 2nd generation ATV) to Apple A5, with a single core ARM Cortex-A0 and dual core with one core closed.

Compared with Apple TV2, ATV 3 also features a better resolution, being able to run content at 1080p over HDMI only and HDCP, quite the significant improvement from the 720 60/50 Hz (NTSC/PAL) and 576p 50 Hz (PAL) over HDMI only.

A lot of people argue that there’s no actual need for ATV to get better since the device already does what it’s supposed to do: provide direct access to your iTunes library from your TV. But since ATV 1st and 2nd generation have been discontinued and that Apple already released a tweaked version of ATV 3, this device is only getting more exciting.

Seas0nPass Jailbreak Tutorial for Apple TV 2nd Generation on iOS 4.4.4

The following guidelines work for an Apple TV2 that runs on iOS 4.4.4. That’s likely quite a rarity, but if you have an Apple TV2 you want to jailbreak and you haven’t upgraded the firmware to iOS 5 and 6, here’s how to do it using the Seas0nPass hack.

Surely not as popular in the jailbreak community as Pwnage and Redsn0w, Seas0nPass works by creating a custom .ipsw file that inserts the jailbreak during the restore process, instead of injecting the ramdisk as the other jailbreaks.

Seas0nPass Jailbreak Tutorial

Step 1

Download Seas0nPass for Apple TV2 that runs on iOS 4.4.4. Select the appropriate file for Mac or Windows, depending on the OS of the computer you are planning to perform the jailbreak from. You can find the download files on Firecore.com.

Step 2

Unzip the download file called Seas0nPass.zip. Launch the.exe file in the resulted folder.

Step 3

You will be displayed with two options “Create IPSW” and “Boot Tethered”. Select the “Create IPSW” option to initiate the jailbreak. This will download ATV firmware 4.4.4 which will then be used to create the custom jailbreak file needed for the process.

Step 4

The software will ask you to connect your ATV 2 to your computer using the Micro USB cable. Do not plug in the power cable too. Wait for the light on the front of the device to start flashing rapidly, a signal that it is time to use the remote to send the ATV2 in DFU mode. You will have to point the remote towards the device and press and hold MENU and PLAY/PAUSE for seven seconds.

Step 5

Release the buttons after you’ve counted seven seconds. This will automatically launch iTunes and begin the restore phase of the jailbreak process.

Step 6

iTunes will confirm when the jailbreak process is complete. Connect your device to the TV and check for the FC logo in the bottom right hand corner of the screen. The logo is displayed temporarily and it’s a sign of a successful restore and jailbreak process.

What is XBMC for Apple TV?

When it comes to customization and added features for Apple TV, XBMC is a free and open source media player application that is compatible with Mac OS X, iOS, Android, Linux, BSD and Microsoft Windows. It is a main option when it comes to hotel television systems, content streaming devices, Smart TVs and so on, providing support for third-party apps, slideshows and even weather forecasts, not to mention most of audio, video and image formats.

XMBC for Apple Tv Guide

XBMC’s plugin system is written in Python programming language, which allows developers to deliver new features using a shorter syntax than commonly. This type of code is compatible with multiple programming paradigms and features automatic memory management with an extensive standard library that is easier to enable. XBMC is also compatible with LAN and other internet networks and can be used to expand the standard features of the ATV to include new television program guides, podcast streaming and a gaming platform.

And there’s a lot more it can do thanks to the embedded Python Scripts Engine for add-on extensions. It allows you to enjoy widgets that connect to photo-sharing websites such as Flickr and Instagram, several online TV guides, even e-mail clients and train-timetables, as well as file-sharing downloaders such as BitTorrent and so on. It also has a built-in feature that automatically downloads metadata information for your content. You get reviews, movie posters, cover arts and other info about your audio and video content from sources such as themoviedb.org, IMDB.com, CDDB, Allmusic, MusicBrainz and FanArt.Tv.

One of XBMC’s best features is being able to perform impressively even on the cheapest devices, provided they are equipped with at least a dual-core 2 GHz CPU. It works with VAAPI Intel, Broadcom and AMD chips, Microsoft DXVA and Apple’s VDADecoder/VideoToolBox, as well as OpenMax.

Customization is also possible, particularly when it comes to skins such as Confluence and Touch (two of the most popular skins among users). All in all, XBMC is one of the main reasons why users jailbreak their Apple Tvs.

How to Add Channels on ATV

“How do I add channels to my Apple TV?”, this is by far one of the most popular questions on Apple Support Communities and similar forums. Not being able to do that natively, has convinced a lot of users to either return their Apple TV calling it “junk” or take a stand and actively customize their user experience via jailbreak. For the moment, developers are still working on the ATV3 jailbreak, but for ATV 2 there are ways of adding channels.

Since the ATV 3 jailbreak is still in the works, you can add channels to ATV 1 and ATV 2 via a jailbreak. There are tutorials available in our How-to section if your device isn’t running a jailbreak yet. For those of you who have already, here are the steps needed to add channels on ATV using XBMC:

Step 1

Look for the add-ons you want on your ATV. Start by browsing the XBMC forums and download the .zip file.

Step 2

Download an SSH client to your computer. PuTTy or WinSCP for Windows or CyberDuck for MAC, one of these will help you browse the ATV menu using your computer. Install it and then connect it to your ATV.

Step 3

Launch XBMC on ATV and go to Settings > System Information to get your IP address.

Step 4

Launch the SSH Client. You will be displayed with Open a Connection window or input boxes. Select “SFTP” or “SSH” for the top drop down menu called “File Transfer Protocol”. Fill in the IP address retrieved from System Information in the “Server” slot. Type in “root” for Username and “alpine” for Password. Click Connect.

Step 5

You are now inside the ATV File System. Go to the XBMC Home Page, found at “/User”.

Step 6

Look for the XBMC add-on. Locate the file, drag it from your computer to XBMC Home Page. It will show up under Applications, Library, Media and Updates.

Step 7

Launch XBMC on ATV. Go to System Menu. You should see the Settings menu with Appearance, Video, Music, Pictures, Weather, Add-ons, Network, System and Skin listed at the left. Select Add-ons.

Step 8

You have four slots available. Use Install from Zip File. That will take you into the file manager, where once again you will need to go to the Home Folder, where the zip file is located. Click on the file to install it. XBMC will display a message in the bottom left corner when your add-on is enabled.

How to Install Add-ons to Apple TV using XBMC

$

0
ATV is a good start for the future of TV gadgets but there’s more than enough room for improvements. With just 18 apps available, no possibility to add or buy more channels on Apple TV and an interface that has many users angry at Apple, this $99 box opens a world of possibilities just with a jailbreak.

Customization is one of the main perks, but so is adding new channels and enjoying content that you didn’t have to pay a subscription for. A jailbreak and XBMC are a really good way to install add-ons to ATV, at least until Apple makes its device a lot more compelling.

To take advantage of the full perks of a jailbreak you need add-ons, which allow you to get new channels, apps and plugins. There are some add-ons and plugins that come with XBMC but when it comes to apps and channels they are never enough. Following is a tutorial that shows you how to install add-ons such as IceFilms, NaviX, FastPassTV, 1Channel, Watchseries or SuperTV on your ATV 1st or 2nd generation. Remember you need to perform a jailbreak first.

XMBC Add-ons
After you have downloaded the zip file you found on the XBMC forum for the add-on you’re interested in, you will have to connect the SSH client to your Apple TV. Software such as PuTTy or WINSCP for Windows and CyberDuck for MAC allow you to browse the ATV menu from your computer. Connecting the SSH client to your Apple TV is not difficult and it is essential to install add-ons and new channels. So download the SSH client that pertains to your computer’s OS and install it.

Step 1

On your Apple TV, launch XBMC and go to System Information in the Settings menu. You need the system’s IP address.

Step 2

On your computer, launch the SSH Client. You will have to fill in a few details. Select SFTP or SSH (File Transfer Protocol) from the drop down menu. Complete the Server slot with your Apple TV’s IP address. For username use “root” and “alpine” for password.

Step 3

Click Connect

Step 4

You are now inside the File System of your ATV. Go to the XBMC Home Page, identifiable by /User.

Step 5

Locate the add-on zip file you have previously downloaded. Drag it from your computer to the XBMC Home Page.

Step 6

Pick up the remote and launch XBMC on Apple TV. Navigate to System Menu and select Add-ons. Install from zip file to add a new feature or select Get Add-ons to see the list of features you’ve already installed.

Step 7

For the Install from zip, XBMC will take you into the file manager. Go to the Home Page, where you’ve copied the zip file. Click it and wait for the system to install it.

Why Is Apple TV3 Jailbreak Taking So Long - Beware Of Scams

$

0

A lot of you have pointed fingers in disbelief calling our project a scam and accused us of doing all this for the money. I’ll say it one more time and that’s it: this is not a scam, we are all in for the challenge of jailbreaking one of Apple’s toughest devices and we all want to deliver a jailbreak that will work for all of us. We’ve been having the busiest time of our lives and it’s been quite difficult to find time to stay connected and keep you updated daily on our project status.

Jailbreaking iOS and A5 devices is difficult, but not impossible, and like evad3rs proved before us, it takes effort and time to release a jailbreak.

iOS 6 on iPhone 5 took them several weeks, but that’s a device that offers a lot more opportunities for exploits than Apple TV 3. The ATV on the other hand offers a very small space of action because there are less services and process running on the $99 device.

That means it is consistently harder for us to achieve full root access because the doorways to do that through are limited in number and better sealed by Apple than other devices. Remember, that it’s not impossible, it’s just a matter of time before we lock in that exploit so stay positive. We get most of our motivation from you, so claims that the jailbreak is never going to be released, accusations that this is a scam and so on can only hurt the project.

Secondly, the Apple TV 3 jailbreak takes so long because we are understaffed, so there are only a few developers working on this. This is particularly the case because most of the hackers familiar with iOS exploits and jailbreaking are focusing on iPhone, iPad and the iPod.

Because ATV exploits are limited and difficult to lock down, only those that love a good challenge are working on the jailbreak. Hopefully, the $2500 bounty will motivate some of you to get involved.

So, in a few words jailbreaking Apple TV3 takes so long because:
  1. We are only a few people working on this jailbreak
  2. The number of processes and services that can be exploited is limited
  3. ATV3 features no natively installed browser, being limited to on screen system access to iTunes and YouTube
  4. All of this means we can’t fully open ATV3 to third party apps...YET!

We are currently testing several exploits, and although we are very close to a partial tethered jailbreak, it’s going to take us a little bit more before we publicly release a bullet-proof fix. So while we keep up the work, keep your fingers crossed and stay positive.

Apple TV 3 Jailbreak Status Update and $2500 Bounty Launch

Posted by: John

We know how much you’ve been waiting for this status update and we’d like to apologize it took us so long to get back at you in a post.(Why is Apple Tv 3 Jailbreak Taking So Long?)
We’ve been communicating with you over the past few weeks via comments, emails and messages and you’ve been of so much help, thanks are in order. I know you’d love more to be thanked with a public jailbreak release for ATV3, but you’re going to have to wait just a little bit more.

We’ve decided to make another call for fellow jailbreakers to get involved. This time around there’s a $2500 bounty and Future Donations Credits to get you motivated.

But first things first. We’ve made a lot of progress and a lot of that is thanks to you. We have currently so many exploits to test we just can’t do it by ourselves.

Like Mike Davies mentioned before, there is an army of global hackers and testers helping with this. Small in numbers, that’s true, but even so big in brain power. Jailbreaking Apple TV 3 is difficult, but it’s not impossible. Remember there’s always a solution, you just have to look for it consistently. We are optimistic about the release of the ATV3 jailbreak in the upcoming weeks, so stay positive, you’ll soon have a reason to unbox your device.

Thanks to everyone and anyone who decides to help us and bring something useful to this project!

Please don't waste our time with comments like :"This is scam", "Where is the Jailbreak" " The Jailbreak will never come out"

If you don't like this website leave it.

And now for the most appealing part of our Apple TV 3 jailbreak status update: the $2500 bounty. Remember we are understaffed and poorly funded, but we decided to award the person that delivers a bullet-proof jailbreak fix for ATV3 with a bounty worth $2500. The money is already set aside to make sure we are all ready to go with a public release as soon as the jailbreak is delivered.

The only condition for the $2500 bounty is to agree to have the ATV3 jailbreak code released publicly for free. We are also ready to give you the Future Donations Credits, so if you’ve been waiting for a good reason to actually set up your mind on developing the ATV3 jailbreak, it doesn’t get any better than this.

Please remember we are all doing our very best to release this jailbreak as soon as possible and that’s why we have decided to launch the $2500 bounty out of my own pocket . Hope that is a good-enough motivation for all of you great hackers out there. Just contact us by email, by comment or via a social network for more details.

I know you’ve been waiting for news on this, so here is where we currently stand with the Apple TV 3 jailbreak. We are currently testing several exploits and most are giving us a handful. A reader reported that xmbc works on atv3 with airparrot via a file called Bonjour64.msi which is obtained from an iTunes file download. We tried that and used it with airplay to try mirroring on atv3 via an iPad with xbmc. So that’s one hack that’s been causing  a lot of headaches.

We’ve also received an ATV3 restore.ipsw file and a key said to be directly from Apple and we are currently testing the jailbreak using that particular code. There’s a lot more that’s going on, just enough hacks to keep us busy night and day. If you want to help, please contact us and we’ll give you a full update.

Also, thanks for the financial support. That’s been very helpful since during the development of the ATV3 jailbreak we’ve burned a lot of devices.

I know the last ATV 3 jailbreak status update article became difficult to scroll for comments, so you can stay in touch with us via the rss feed for comments available here: www.appletv3jailbreak.com/feeds/comments/default. I have also set up a widget to help stay in touch and now you can follow us by e-mail. You can find it in the right sidebar.

While we’re still working on the jailbreak for ATV3, you will have a new section at hand to browse on our website. We have put together a comprehensive selection of How To articles that will help you make the most of your ATV and it will be available in the next days.

Articles vary from teaching you how to set up your Apple TV and how to set up home sharing for Apple TV or how to use AirPlay Mirroring, as well as troubleshooting for common issues. Our Apple TV hacks, how-to articles and guides will apply to all generation-devices, not just ATV 3.
Thank you all for being so patient and remember, stay positive and don't give up on getting the jailbreak for ATV3.

TV Scraper Add-ons for Apple TV via XBMC v12 (Frodo) to Sort Out Your Content Library

If you’re not exactly familiar with web scrapers and importers you might want to know exactly what a TV scraper does to understand why it would be cool to have one installed on your ATV. These tools are used by the XBMC Media Center to retrieve metadata information about your digital content. This means through one of these you’re getting artwork, episode and season number, resolution and type for music and movies.

IMDB used to be the only importer for XBMC but with recent updates scrapers today are available in different languages and from different sources. If you’re patient enough you can even make a custom TV scraper of your own. Until we publish our own tutorial on how to do that, you can use this one. We will get back at you with full tutorials on how to set content and scanning of your video library, including subfolders, movie and TV show content settings.
TV Scraper Add-ons for Apple TV

For now here are the settings for the Movie scraper which lists the following options: Keep Original Title, Enable Fanart (yes or no), Enable Trailer from YouTube (yes or no to download YouTube movie trailers), Prefer trailer from HD-Trailers.net (yes or no if you want to use an alternative trailer download; select No if it’s YouTube trailers you want), Preferred language (set the language preferred for metadata and summaries, e.g. en for English) and finally, Get rating from (select the website you want to download ratings for your movies, e.g. IMDb).

Settings for TV show scraper settings are similar. The General TVDB add-on settings list Use DVD Order (instead of broadcast), Use Absolute Ordering – Single Season (play the TV show as one season), Enable Fanart (yes or no), Prefer Posters (enable it to download posters instead of banners; if you’re using the default skin toggle the layout settings) and Language (set the language preferred for metadata and summaries, e.g. en for English).
